Our friends at Ecofusion presented WaldenStreet with a challenge. How can we deliver an easily updatable map of clean energy sites that integrates well with the Harvesting Clean Energy visual brand? Oh, and the folks at Harvesting Clean Energy are going to be adding to this list of locations from time to time.

The solution WaldenStreet proposed was to create an API for the Harvesting Clean Energy database, which could then be exposed for any mapping service. In this case, WaldenStreet chose a specialized Flash-based mapping component that could be used as the kernel for a mapping widget, which WaldenStreet would host.

The solution, which was developed in early 2006, was an early example of API-based widgets. It's a similar approach to what Google has done more recently with their Linked Custom Search Engines.
